Chapter 12

Her eyes

Michael

Leaving my mother’s cabin, I removed the borrowed clothes and arranged them on the porch, then called my beast, and we made the journey to the pack.

My animal was particularly anxious. Like children when you give them a lot of sugar. And the right word to describe its attitude would be hyperactive. I know that its bizarre behaviour has to do with Terra. Since never behaved like this before, my beast made me feel so many strange feelings.

And thinking about what I talked about with my mother, I’m apprehensive. Because I feel the roots of the bond between her and me climbing all over my body. And with only a day of being exposed to her. Every time I close my eyes, all I see is her determined face. Foolish and stubborn from what I’ve learned in those few hours together. That made me smile.

But another image suddenly appeared in my mind. The faces of Laura and my daughter completely sour my soul. I picked up my pace, as a strong urge to be with them came out of nowhere. That meant, my family was hurting, and they needed me. Going faster, I tried to reach them sooner.

I know Laura is feeling vulnerable and exposed. This must be devastating for her. And there is also the detail that I have not yet spoken to my daughter, to explain. I have to reaffirm to her that she is the most precious thing in my life and that I would not abandon her for any reason.

All the way I meditated on my situation without realizing that I was already at the entrance of the town. My wolf trotted through the streets, which would usually be half empty. Most would be working, so I was surprised to see many people out, and they were all looking at me in a weird way.

Paying no more attention to them, I reach my cabin. It was still relatively early, so I expected to find my daughter and wife at home.

Laura, after making breakfast and preparing everything for the day, takes Susie to school, and then returns home, to later go to the office and help me with some things.

Arriving at the entrance, I left my animal and transformed. I opened the door and closed it behind me. The house was quiet, which, I thought, was odd, so I went up to my room to get dressed. When I was ready, I went to my daughter’s room to see if they were there.

I knocked on the door, but no one answered, so I opened it and saw that no one was there.

Maybe they left already for school.

I closed the door and went downstairs to the kitchen. I noticed that on the table there was a plate covered by a napkin, I picked it up and saw that it was my breakfast.

A lump formed in my throat, which caused my heart to ache, maybe it was the guilt. Laura, despite everything, never forgot about me.

I took the plate and put it in the microwave to warm it up, and when it was ready, I sat down at the table to eat. I looked around me and felt lonely for the first time, I needed my family.

Already in the office, I dedicated myself to solving the pending. Time passed, and I continued immersed in my work until I felt my beta contact me mentally.

“Alpha, come to Ruth’s store immediately, it’s urgent.”

I dropped everything and quickly got up from my chair, heading towards the door as I replied, “I’m on my way, Logan.”

Wasting no time, I got in my Jeep and drove through town, until I reached Logan’s sister’s shop. A circle of people blocked my view, but I got out of the car and ran to see what was happening.

In the distance, I saw Logan’s head, which stood out from the others, since he was the tallest. I made my way to where he was, hearing curses and shouts, and as I reached the centre, the air in my lungs vanished.

In front of me was a disturbing scene that I never dreamed of seeing.

Terra was on the floor with her forehead covered in blood, in front of her was Logan, holding back several women with stones and sticks in hand. And what made my heart stop was that Laura and my daughter were among them.

My animal roared, making the whole place go silent. No one dared to move or say anything as I walked with my fangs in the air and my claws extended in the direction of my mate. My eyes felt heavy with popped veins. And before reaching her, out of the corner of my eye I saw my daughter cower in my presence, hiding behind her mother, who, like her, was also cowering. But that didn’t matter to me, since my beast had only one thing in mind, and that was to go after Terra. I was completely blinded.

Once in front of her, I knelt down and took her in my arms. She held on to me with all her strength and, placing her head between my neck and shoulder, she let out a broken sigh. An animalistic feeling was growing in me, which touched me deeply. I didn’t want to let go of Terra for the world, and holding her head with my other hand, I lifted her up and walked through the crowd of wolves who were completely stunned.

Nothing crosses my mind, except tending to the wounds of my mate, I didn’t even turn in the direction of my family, whom I still could feel their eyes on me. My animal was in charge.

“Michael, Michael, come back”, I heard Laura yell from a distance as I walked towards my jeep, but I didn’t turn around, I kept going until I reached the vehicle. Carefully, I placed my mate on the ground and opened the door, then I helped her up, and I did the same.

Once inside, I took out some tissues from the glove compartment, then hold Terra’s chin and tilted her head to see the cut that was above her eyebrow, which was bleeding profusely. I took a handkerchief, and wiped it off her, being careful not to hurt her, “Ouch”, apparently it was impossible since she complained anyway, but that didn’t stop me from finishing what I started. And while I was doing this, I felt her gaze penetrating the depths of my being. I figured it was a couple of hot coals touching my soul. It was so much that I had to lift my eyes towards hers.

Her gaze caught me completely, and I got lost in the most intense green I had ever seen. I wanted to get into them and never come out. Terra’s eyes had conquered me.
