Chapter 29

I feel nothing for you

Michael

The lights in the cabin were on, indicating that indeed someone was there. I looked at my daughter, who couldn’t contain the emotion of knowing that her mother had returned. Swallowing hard, I, returned my sight to my house. And before taking another step, the door opened, and Laura’s contrite face was revealed. Seeing us, she smiled weakly, letting me know that she was waiting for us.

Out of the corner of her eye, Laura noticed Logan, who was next to me, but she didn’t pay him any more attention.

She flung the door open and stepped out of the way for us to enter. And so we did. Susie let go of my hand and ran to where her mother was, giving her a hug that told me how much she had missed her. Did I miss her?

“Michael”, her voice, was like a sigh carried by the wind. Her regret at what she had done was evident. I knew her very well and knew when she was sorry about something. This was one of them.

I put my hand on Logan’s shoulder, and said, “Wait for me out here. I have to resolve this in private.” Nodding his head, he remained at the entrance to the cabin while I wordlessly entered and headed for the living room. Laura and Susie followed me, all sitting down at the same time.

She was in front of me, and Susie was next to her. And while Laura nervously played with her fingers, I took the opportunity to watch her. Twelve years of my life I spent with her, and after not seeing each other for a few days, I realized that she stopped existing in my head. Now, I feel nothing when I see those honey-coloured eyes that transmitted calm to me once. Or that black hair that I liked to tangle between my fingers and play with. The dependency and trust I felt for her were absent. Nothing. Zero. No love, no longing, absolutely nothing.

Like an unstoppable whirlwind, Terra swept away everything that anchored me to this woman, reducing her to a mere memory. Just a memory from my past life. Laura was no longer important to me, becoming one of the pack members only. Sadly, that’s the way it is, but I’m grateful that Terra decided to fight for our future, and made me turn the page of my story in time before I lost more years of my life. I’m sorry I said yes to her. Sorry for the ignorance in which we were all. Regrets, regrets. I regret it all…

“Michael, give us another chance. All these years together must have meant something to you. We are a couple, husband, and wife. Can’t you see? We were happy until that thief came.”

I don’t know how it started, but the only thing I could hear was the hostility that Laura conveyed with her words towards my mate. I roared furiously, and at the same time got up from the chair, showing her my intimidating figure. My animal also couldn’t stand the insults towards Terra. Laura immediately fell to her knees, exposing her neck. Susie did the same. And with a deep and animalistic voice, I told my daughter, “Go up to your room. This is between your mother and me.” Without wasting a second, she got up from the ground, obeying her Alpha, and went up the stairs without looking back.

Once alone, I approached her, and taking her arm, I lifted her up abruptly. My beast was warning her to submit to its authority, and she did so, exposing her neck. But that was not enough for us, since no one was going to insult or harm our mate.

“Listen to me, Laura”, through my teeth, I told her, “It is unclear to me why you’ve come back, but I’m warning you to stay away from Terra. I know you and accepting that we are no longer together, so easy, is impossible. You and I are in the past, and I know how dangerous you could be. You demonstrated it several times by making an attempt on Terra’s life. But this time I won’t let you hurt her. I will destroy you with the same hands that once gave you everything.” My breathing was fast and shallow. Laura was a threat despite our years of knowing each other. My beast no longer recognized her as a partner, but the opposite. She was someone to be careful of.

Though Laura was crying, what are a few tears compared to my mate’s blood, dripping, or seeing the pain on her face? Nothing.

“I see that you discarded me, leaving me with nothing. What we did together for twelve years was all in vain. But if we can’t be a family again, I’m here for my daughter. Leaving her alone was a terrible thing to do. I want to rectify that mistake, even though she broke us as a family.” She wiped away her tears and took a step back, sitting back down on the couch. And without looking up at me, she continued, “Neither Susie nor I are to blame; however, we are the only ones who will lose at the end of the day.” I thought about what she was saying for a moment, and in truth, she and Susie were the most affected in this unfortunate situation.

However, there was little I could do to make it up to her. Laura had to rebuild her life, starting over. And regarding my daughter, I will always be there for her. Always.

Calming down a bit, I returned to the sofa across from her and sat down, then said, “It’s not your fault this happened, but our actions will always have consequences. I will not kick you out of the pack, since, as you mentioned, Susie does not deserve this. But you will dedicate yourself one hundred percent to her without interfering in my life. Terra is beyond your reach, and the work you did before this happened will no longer be possible for you. You are banned from all access to critical pack information. But don’t worry, I’ll ask Logan to get you a job that you can do while Susie is at school. You can also stay in this cabin. I’ll be the one to move.”

And without saying anything else, I got up and headed for the stairs, towards my daughter’s room, but before I got there I heard Laura say in an almost audible low voice, “You’re going to regret this, Michael.”
