Chapter 23

Knowing her

Terra
This is the second time that I am in front of this cabin. When I first arrived, I was happy to know that my mate was here. At that time, my mind was not with me due to the immense happiness, and I wasn’t unaware of what was waiting for me, but now…
Michael was watching me, I could feel his gaze even though my eyes were straight ahead. He opened the door and with a little push, I knew this was inevitable. My mate stepped forward, taking me with him.
When I put my foot inside, the first thing my brain registered was her smell. Laura. Immediately, my stomach turned. I would never want to have that smell near Michael, ever. The hand of my mate that I was holding so gently seconds ago, I squeezed it tightly, letting him know what I was feeling. He was mine, and the smell of another permeates everywhere.
Helplessly, my fangs descended, and the fur began to cover the surface of my arm, bristling. A growl escaped me as well, alerting him to the situation. Michael widened his eyes and yanking my arm hard, he hugged me, as if he were holding me back, containing all my emotions. One of his hands, he placed it on the back of my neck, bringing my head towards his chest. Inhaling his essence eagerly, the smoke that was clouding my senses began to fade, and little by little my skin returned, as well my fangs retracted.
I took Michael’s shirt in my fists and closed my eyes, telling myself that no one was going to take him away from me, that he is mine. Michael is mine.
My mate was worried as I could feel his emotions. No, I would rather not cause trouble with my actions, but how to contain all this?
I raised my face and our eyes met, and at that moment I knew how vulnerable I was. My life depended on him, and if at any time he decided to go looking for her, or be with another, I would die. No, thinking better, I wouldn’t deny him anything. Yeah, if he asked me, I wouldn’t oppose, him since I would rather have half of him than be empty like before. And that made my heart ache.
“Hey, hey, look at me, Terra,” Michael said, as he tipped my chin up with a finger. My eyes locked on his, and I swore that I could even see part of his soul.
“You are my mate, and no one else. My heart is yours, and my life too. Stop assuming things that are not, Terra, I know what you are thinking” he said, while my bowels were filled with adrenaline. Then he brought his face closer to mine and brushed his sweet lips against mine. I held on to him harder, not caring if my claws were torturing his skin. I needed him with me, close, very close.
Michael then touched his mark on my neck, and as if hypnotized, my entire body calmed down, remaining at peace, driving away the thoughts that were killing my soul. “You bear my mark, and I yours. We are fated mates in this life and beyond. You and me, Terra.”
I closed my eyes, processing his words, and the terrible weight on my shoulders disappeared, and I could breathe again. And when I felt better, I realized the show I was giving, feeling embarrassed of myself. I have to control this obsession. This love is mixed with my blood, flowing throughout my bloodstream, nurturing this feeling that is everything to me.
“Dad”, the insecure voice of Michael’s daughter, made me stay still and straighten my back. Michael turned to where the sound came from, just like me, and we saw his daughter who was going down the stairs. When she observed us in this state, she stopped, looking at her father, and out of the corner of her eye at me, as if she was wondering if everything was alright.
But Michael, without letting me go, extended his arm towards her, and said, “Susie, come, I want to introduce you to Terra.”
She hesitated, but in the end, descended her way towards us. She stopped a few centimetres from us, and having her within reach, he embraced her with his free arm. Michael had me hugged on his right side, and Susie on his left side, while kissing her head. I was nervous, I knew that this visit was going to be difficult given the circumstances and not knowing the reaction of this little girl.
“Let’s go to the living room,” said Michael, and without waiting for our reply, he guided us to a cosy set of armchairs, where a wooden table with glass was adorning the centre. It was beautiful, and surely Laura chose it. Shit! I couldn’t stop thinking about her when seeing all this. This was her house until a couple of days ago. What a terrible situation.
“Take a seat, Terra, Susie. Right away, I’ll be back with some drinks,” he said while looking at his daughter, who agreed slightly with her head. Thereafter, he went to a door that surely was the kitchen, leaving us alone. Susie was looking at her shoes, and it was obvious that she wouldn’t open a conversation, or be the first to talk to me. So, I filled my lungs with air, and I told her, “Susie, it was never my intention to cause trouble. Although that’s precisely what I have been doing since I put a foot in Savage Claw.” She continued looking at the ground, but I was not going to give up.
“I want you to know that you can always count on me for whatever you need. Anything. For example, if you want to go camping, count on me, or go shopping, I am the right person. Helping you with your homework, no, I don’t recommend that, since my grades weren’t the best.” And when I finished saying the last word, it was then when I knew somehow I was reaching her because she lifted her eyes from the ground, and directed them towards me.
“I don’t need your help on that, my dad is the smartest wolf of the pack. He always helps me with everything”, Susie paused and looked at the floor again, but I could hear what she said in an almost inaudible voice, which made me think that eventually, everything would be OK.
“I have never gone camping”.
